Singapore’s urban evolution constantly reimagines its districts to support emerging industries, and nowhere is this more evident than in the transformation of one-north—the city-state’s innovation heartland. Once a largely underutilised area in the western reaches of the Queenstown planning area, one-north has grown into a vibrant knowledge and research hub that integrates work, living, play and learn environments. Now, as plans under the Greater one-north Master Plan take shape, the precinct—especially around Media Circle—is poised to become the next iconic innovation landmark, earning a reputation as the “New Queenstown” for biomedical and technology clusters.

At its core, one-north was conceived as a purpose-built ecosystem to catalyse innovation and cross-disciplinary collaboration. Spanning roughly 200 hectares, it was designed to bring together institutions that focus on biomedical sciences, infocommunications technology, media, and engineering alongside research and residential spaces, creating a dynamic work-live-play-learn precinct unlike traditional business parks.

Biomedical and Tech Clusters Driving Growth

One of the defining features of one-north has been the development of key industry clusters such as Biopolis and Fusionopolis—each acting as anchor nodes for research, technology and innovation. Biopolis is dedicated to biomedical research and development, housing both public and private organisations that push the frontiers of life sciences. With ongoing expansions like Biopolis Phase 6, biomedical innovation and R&D space continue to grow, reinforcing Singapore’s status as a regional life sciences hub.

Meanwhile, Fusionopolis has emerged as a vibrant centre for infocomm technology, media, engineering and scientific research. Linking commercial, research, and higher education facilities, it enables seamless interaction between academic research and private sector innovation—an essential component in a knowledge-driven economy.

Beyond these, smaller clusters such as Blk71 and LaunchPad @ one-north have carved out niches as start-up incubators, fostering entrepreneurial ecosystems that have attracted venture capital and emerging tech firms. With Block71 often described as the heart of Singapore’s tech start-up ecosystem, its presence further deepens one-north’s role in shaping a future-ready economy.

Media Circle: The Next Innovation Landmark

While one-north’s establishment carved out strategic spaces for innovation, recent plans under the Greater one-north Master Plan have accelerated its transformation. The Master Plan outlines new residential and mixed-use developments around Media Circle—an area that is increasingly central to both the daily life and work patterns of professionals, researchers, and students.

Media Circle is uniquely positioned within one-north’s broader ecosystem. It sits adjacent to core innovation precincts like Mediapolis, which is dedicated to media and creative industries, and remains within walking distance of key research clusters. In addition to its proximity to innovation nodes, plans for enhanced connectivity and expanded amenities around Media Circle are set to reinforce its appeal as a live-work-play destination.

The shift towards integrating residential living within one-north—including sites at Media Circle—reflects a broader urban planning strategy to densify and humanise innovation districts. By bringing more people to live close to their workplaces, the precinct becomes a vibrant ecosystem of everyday interactions, juxtaposing leisure and work activities in a manner that supports creative exchange and serendipitous collaboration.

The Broader Impact on Singapore’s Innovation Landscape

Singapore’s emphasis on knowledge-driven economic growth is underpinned by national planning strategies such as the Urban Redevelopment Authority’s Master Plan, which envisages precincts like Greater one-north as enablers of future industries. The Master Plan’s vision balances enhanced living environments with evolving business needs, ensuring that areas like Media Circle support not just commercial activity but also quality of life through integrated amenities, transit access and public spaces.

By 2030 and beyond, Media Circle and its surrounding clusters are expected to solidify one-north’s position as a regional innovation landmark—a place where biomedical sciences, advanced technology, media and entrepreneurial ventures converge. This transformation will continue to attract global talent, leading enterprises, and forward-thinking investors, accelerating Singapore’s journey towards a resilient, innovation-led future.
